Workout Week 8 – Lower the Bar, Not the Standard

This week was heavy in a different way.

Multiple strategy meetings. Offsites. Late nights. Light testing. Less than ideal eating. Sleep compressed. The kind of week where routines don’t break, but they get tested.

Normally, my cardio expectation is 30 to 45 minutes. Anything less feels like it doesn’t count. And by Saturday, I had only logged one session instead of two or three.

After weight training today, I almost skipped it. Twenty minutes felt too small to matter.

But I did it anyway. Think less, do fast.

And that shift — lowering the bar for entry without lowering the standard — changed the entire feel of the week.

Three full weight sessions still got done. That’s the standard.

Cardio didn’t look perfect, but participation stayed intact.

The same thing happened with weight.

With the busyness, stress, and late nights, I hovered around 174 pounds, up from 171 to 172. I’d be lying if I said that didn’t get in my head. The story starts quickly: you’re slipping, you’re off track, it’s not working.

But I stayed consistent with macros. Not perfect. A few days over calories. But I tracked. I stayed aware. I didn’t abandon the system. Sometimes I need to think about zooming out on the day to day metrics to see the overall process and progress.

When things normalized for even a day and I tightened back in, something interesting happened.

Thursday morning: 169.4.

Not the 169 goal yet. But closer than I’ve ever been.

That’s what this week reinforced for me.

The standard is long term healthspan.

The bar for participation can flex.

Rigid expectations make consistency fragile. Adjusted expectations make it durable.

Progress isn’t built in ideal weeks. It’s built in busy ones where you still choose to show up, even if the version looks smaller than planned.

Lower the bar.

Not the standard.
