This week forced me to look at a story I didn’t realize was running in the background.
Somewhere along the way, I started believing workouts had to be hard to count. That if I wasn’t chasing a PR, pushing volume, or walking out completely spent, I wasn’t really progressing. Bigger weight. Louder effort. Visible strain.
And honestly, that story makes sense. It’s natural. Ego defaults to “more is better.” Society reinforces it. PR equals strength. Sweat equals worth.
But this week, the work looked different.
More mobility. More controlled reps. Slower tempo. Positions that feel less impressive and more humbling. The kind of training that doesn’t light up the highlight reel but quietly reinforces the foundation.
At first glance, it can feel like “less.”
Less intensity. Less adrenaline. Less visible progress.
But I’m starting to understand something deeper.
Different songs, at different volumes, are needed to round out the result.
If I only train at max volume, I build something loud but incomplete. Mobility, control, and positional strength are quieter forms of power. They don’t shout. They accumulate.

Healthspan isn’t built on one setting. It’s built on adjusting the dial when needed.
This week wasn’t about breaking records. It was about reinforcing longevity. About choosing durability over ego. About trusting that strength shows up at every volume if I’m willing to value it.
That’s progress too.
